Honors English I

Honors English I Summer Reading Promo Video

Dear Prospective Honors English I Student:

We are very excited about Honors English I at Edwards Middle School and the prospect of having you in our classes during the 2021-22 school year! Requirements for the class include one summer reading assignment.

The reading assignment will be followed by an in-depth unit of class instruction concerning the three levels of meaning in the novel.

Assignment:

Read The Call of the Wild by Jack London.

Procedure:

You are expected to locate your own copy of the book to read over the summer. You may purchase a copy, check it out of a local library, or read it online using the QR code above. You will need to have a personal copy of the text in class when school starts (electronic or print). You should make a bulleted list of the most important events in each of the seven chapters as you read.

If you have questions, please contact:

williamchandler@pickens.k12.sc.us

kendraellenburg@pickens.k12.sc.us

Please allow one week for a response.

Honors Algebra I

To prepare and review for Algebra I content, you are asked to complete the On-Ramp from
Algebra Nation before school begins. On the R.C. Edwards Middle School home webpage as
one of the scrolling announcements, there will be a link to information regarding this
recommended summer work for Algebra I Honors. From this link, you can watch a video
explaining how to access the On-Ramp from Algebra Nation and what to expect. You can also
use this website to access the video: https://rb.gy/c11xou

The material included in the On-Ramp has content beginning Algebra I-H students should have already mastered—mostly without a calculator!, and are necessary to be successful in Algebra I. This material will also be included in the first test during the second week of school. If you completed any of the On-Ramp during 7th grade, you are being asked to complete it again in preparation for Algebra I Honors. You may complete this practice at any time during the summer, but please have it finished by the beginning of school (August 3, 2021).

Additionally, in Algebra I, we will be using a graphing calculator daily. The Texas Instruments TI-84 calculator will be used during instruction. R.C. Edwards will have TI-84 plus calculatorsthat you will be able to rent for the year at registration and on MySchoolBucks. Students will be able to use a graphing calculator on all testing next year, including the Algebra End of Course final exam. Moreover, these calculators are the same ones needed for high school math and science courses.

If you choose to purchase a graphing calculator, the TI-84 Plus family (TI-84 Plus, silver, or CE) of calculators is one of the best choices on the market. These calculators have the ability to upgrade the operating system via a computer or other calculator. During the summer months, these calculators sometimes go on sale, so by having this information you can take advantage of any savings as these calculators are expensive. If you purchase one, please keep all cords and purchase information that comes with your calculator since some are rechargeable and you will need the cord to keep it charged. Please keep in mind that the purchase of a graphing calculator is completely optional, and you are by no means required to purchase one for this class.

If you have any questions about purchasing a graphing calculator, please feel free to contact Lee Cory: leecory@pickens.k12.sc.us
