GP2W: Forest Acres Elementary School

"GP2W" stands for Great Place To Work.  The four characters serve as a reminder in communication among our staff of the culture of our district. Each week through the school year, our website will feature an article on one of our schools, departments, or people explaining how they make SDPC a Great Place To Work!

Forest Acres Elementary is a GREAT PLACE TO WORK! Our theme for the year is "Nothing Could Be Finer. . ." with the option for staff and students to fill in the end of the phrase. I proudly feel that Nothing Could Be Finer than working in the School District of Pickens County AT Forest Acres Elementary. The staff is dedicated to developing compassionate, lifelong learners by providing an educational environment that challenges all students.

It has been said that "... Leadership tomorrow depends on how we educate our students today—especially in Science, FAEfront.jpgTechnology, Engineering and Math." At Forest Acres we are very fortunate to have our 2014-15 Teacher of the Year, Stacy Bullard, as the one leading our students in a culmination of these areas. Mrs. Bullard, an exceptional math and science teacher at Forest Acres, started the STEM program at our school during the 2013-2014 school year. Although this was very new to our school and to our district, Mrs. Bullard took on the challenge and has made many strides with our students in the four areas of science, technology, engineering, and math. She focuses on these areas together not only because the skills and knowledge in each discipline are essential for student success, but also because these fields are intertwined in the real world and in how students learn most effectively. Through her leadership and instruction, she helps students become problem solvers, critical thinkers, team players, and collaborative communicators. The students are actively engaged in many projects throughout the year, all designed to enhance each grade level's curriculum. One of their most exciting projects they are involved in is the Robotics project. They design, program, and build robots while working with their peers.

Bullard.jpgWhen asked their thoughts about the STEM program, 5th graders made these comments…"Mrs. Bullard takes the not-so-fun things we have to learn and makes them FUN!" "She is very creative and happy." "She is always positive." "We're learning, but she makes it so fun." "She puts us with people that we wouldn't always choose to be with, but we learn to work together." "She tells us it's ok to make mistakes. We just get to try again."

Our Support Employee of the Year for 2014-15 is Stacy Massarelli. Stacy serves as our Data Entry in the front office. Her careful attention to detail has caused her to excel in this position. However, her kind and thoughtful attitude is perhaps her greatest strength.

Mrs. Massarelli's constant smile and positive approach to work and life has made her office a frequently needed stop Massarelli.jpgfor students and staff that need affirmation that it's going to be a great day. Mrs. Massarelli has a great ability to place new families at ease when registering at FAE. Her commitment to working hard with a wonderful attitude garnered the attention of the staff and led to her selection as the SEOY.

Confucius is quoted as saying, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." It is obvious from the feedback from students and staff that Mrs. Bullard and Mrs. Massarelli love what they do daily. They both have an ability to make those around them forget that we have a "job" and remind us that we "get to" inspire children and each other each day. Thanks to both of them for making a difference at Forest Acres!
