GP2W: Dacusville Middle School

"GP2W" stands for Great Place To Work.  The four characters serve as a reminder in communication among our staff of the culture of our district. Each week through the school, our website will feature an article on one of our schools or departments explaining why their site is a Great Place To Work!

Dacusville Middle School is situated on a beautiful, 113-acre campus located in the northeastern corner of Pickens County. We have scenic views of the country-side, a campus walking trail, a working greenhouse, a butterfly garden, fish pond, and bird sanctuary. We are truly a community-minded school who benefits from the support of parents, community leaders, and business partners. Our faculty and staff are as wonderful as our campus is beautiful!

Our dedicated faculty and staff of 48 individuals are committed to providing a rigorous and relevant education to our students in an environment that is founded in building relationships with our students and in nurturing them with Dacusville pride. Our teachers work hard to prepare our students for tomorrow’s challenges. They facilitate the development of soft skills such as integrity, work ethic, and interpersonal skills that are necessary for success in today’s world. They work hard planning and delivering innovative, demanding lessons to their students each and every day. It is this work ethic that they model for their students, and which pays off with the success of every child.

Our 2014-15 Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Toni Johnson, is an excellent example of how special Dacusville Middle School johnson.jpgteachers are. Mrs. Johnson has been a Gold Wave for six years and is a member of the Dacusville Community. She holds an undergraduate degree from Clemson University and a Master’s Degree in Divergent Learning from Columbia College. Each year, she builds relationships with her students as she learns more about them and their interests. She uses her relationships as a way to care for her students and to edify their learning. She enjoys teaching Literature and uses her understanding of adolescents and their interests to make learning fun. She goes the extra mile for those who need her help and works to ensure that her students reach their fullest potential. Mrs. Johnson uses the three R’s of Rigor, Relationships, and Relevance to guide her work with students throughout the school year.
Another outstanding example of a special Gold Wave is Mrs. Amanda McCullough. Mrs. McCullough is our Head Custodian at Dacusville Middle and was chosen by the staff as our 2014-15 Support Employee of the Year. She resides in the Pickens area and enjoys spending time with her family. Taking care of others is important to Mrs. McCullough which makes her McCullough.jpgsuper special to our students and to the staff. Her gifts of organization and energy help her to create a facility free of clutter and a place our students and faculty feel comfortable to work. She always has a positive attitude and she wants DMS students to enjoy their day at school.

These two individuals are wonderful examples of our staff at DMS! Recently, a faculty member shared with me the cover page of our school yearbook. This page contained a quote that read, “Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.” This quote reminds me that each and every staff member at Dacusville Middle School has a gift to share with our students. Their gift may be their love of life, their compassion to others, or the joy they take in helping others. Each faculty member has a gift they use to make an impact on the students in their care. Our individual influence can only be topped by the combined efforts we make as a faculty. Our faculty’s influence is strong, and our students benefit from our combined efforts in developing tomorrow’s leaders who are college and career ready.
Dacusville Middle School is a Great Place to Work because of teachers who are making an impact on the future of our community by making a difference in our students’ lives. Dacusville Middle School is a Great Place to Work because of the wonderful students and families we are privileged to serve. Dacusville Middle School is a Great Place to Work because of the supportive community members who value education and who want the best for the children of Dacusville. We are determined, and we are distinctive…We are Dacusville!
