"GP2W" stands for Great Place To Work. The four characters serve as a reminder in communication among our staff of the culture of our district. Each week through the school year, our website will feature an article on one of our schools, departments, or people explaining how they make SDPC a Great Place To Work!
by Carlton Lewis, Principal
Ambler Elementary School is indeed a "Great Place to Work!" I am currently serving this strong community school as principal for my 15th year. We are fortunate to have a staff full of Team Players, in my opinion, and we love our jobs! We are an extended family, we work hard to support each other as well as to teach and encourage our precious children.
I love the phrase, "People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care." At Ambler Elementary School, we have a staff full of caring adults who love encouraging children to put out their best efforts each day toward striving to reach his or her full potential. We have a very positive school climate that is conducive to learning, and I am very proud of our academic success here. Our teachers and students earned a perfect score of 100 on the School Report card two years in a row from the State Department of Education. This score was based on the spring PASS Test data over the last 2 school years. This earned Ambler a Palmetto Gold Award in both the Absolute Rating and the Growth Rating areas. The Ambler teachers are very dedicated, talented educators who go the extra mile to do everything they can to give each child the individual attention they need to be successful. We take a great deal of pride in each of our Ambler staff members—both certified staff and support staff—showing "a Heart for Children" with the pursuit of using each work day as an opportunity to encourage as many children as possible. Our philosophy is centered on the fact that our children are our greatest gifts and blessings so let's do our very best to make sure each one feels special.
Our goal this school year is to try and be more empathetic and more compassionate individually and collectively as a TEAM! We aim to do our very best to move each child forward as much as possible from Day 1 to Day 180 or however long we serve them. We want to build a strong academic foundation as well as to build strong character as we work to teach our children right from wrong in their early, impressionable years from K4-5th grade.
We are departmentalized in grades 3-5 meaning two teachers work closely together in team teaching the students. One teacher focuses on the math and science curriculum standards while the other teacher focuses on the ELA and Social Studies curriculum standards. This has proved successful for our students here at Ambler over many years.
Sherry Crawford is serving this 2014-2015 year as our Support Staff Employee of the Year. She worked the last 2 years as a K5 Assistant with Mrs. Cathy Martin, K5 Teacher. They were a very strong team. She showed a great work ethic during that time by adding on early childhood certification to her elementary certification so that she is certified to teach K4-5th grade now. She is working this year as our K4 Teacher at Ambler and doing an outstanding job. Sherry is a wonderful addition to our faculty!
Courtney Vaughan is serving this 2014-2015 year as our Teacher of the Year. Courtney serves as our Reading Coach and Reading Recovery Teacher. She has taught at Ambler for 3 years after teaching 5th grade at Crosswell for several years. She worked extremely hard during the 2013-2014 year with teaching our struggling readers in grades 1,2, and 3 in small LLI (Leveled Literacy Intervention) groups of four students. She also gave individual one-on-one Reading instruction to eight first grade children in our fantastic, research-based, proven Reading Recovery Program. She has made a huge positive difference in many of our young children's lives with boosting their reading levels and boosting their confidence and self-esteem, which is the real key to educational success.
Lastly, our Ambler family is focused on growing each student into lifelong learners. We begin each year ready to meet challenges head on with a positive attitude and a smile. Our goal is for everyone who enters our doors to feel welcomed and to sense our mission of learning and growing our children into successful students.
