The 2016 South Carolina School Report Cards released by the state Department of Education revealed the on-time graduation rate hitting a new high in the School District of Pickens County. The on-time graduation rate for the class of 2016 was 83.4 percent, which is higher than the statewide on-time graduation rate and represents a significant increase from just four years ago, when the rate was 76.8 percent.

“I am extremely proud of the improvement our district has made in this area. Our graduation rate shows how much care our teachers and staff put into each student to make sure that they reach their goals and have a bright future,” said Dr. Danny Merck, SDPC Superintendent. “The addition of graduation coaches several years ago and the hard work of our Adult Learning Center have had a huge influence on students to finish strong through the end of high school.”

The graduation rate hit a new high for two of the districts high schools: Daniel High School and Easley High School. EHS hit a new record high of 86.5 percent, and DHS reached 90.2 percent, becoming the first school in Pickens County ever to surpass a 90 percent graduation rate.

The South Carolina School Report Cards, which can be viewed on the SC Department of Education website, offer an array of information on district and school performance. Unlike in some past years, the 2016 Report Cards do not give a single overall rating to schools or districts.

“We think the Report Cards are a very helpful tool both for educators and for parents to get a thorough view of how our schools are performing. Much of the information included in the Report cards has been released already, but it is very useful to have it all displayed in a single location,” Merck said. “I look forward to working with the Education Oversight Committee and my colleagues around the state as we continue to craft an accountability system for the future.”
